A discrimination lawsuit was recently filed against Team Illinois Hockey Club and the Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois.
Team Illinois Hockey Club and the Illinois Amateur Hockey Association are in hot water after a teenage hockey player and her family decided to file a lawsuit on allegations that teenage Morgan Urso “was removed from their team after being coached by had told her sanity is struggling. “

Urso is 15 years old and loves hockey so much that she has been playing the sport since she was four. About a year and a half ago, Urso began suffering from mental health problems, including severe depression and thoughts of suicide, and told her trainer, someone she trust and could trust, about her struggling response she was hoping for. The morning after she told him about her struggles, the trainer went to the board and, according to the lawsuit, had her “effectively removed from the team.”
As part of the lawsuit, Urso and her family accuse the Team Illinois Hockey Club and the Illinois Amateur Hockey Association of “discriminating against Urso’s intellectual disability.” The suit further claims that Morgan’s doctors “told them hockey was good for Morgan because the routine and exercise helped her”. Kelly Urso, Morgan’s mother, said:
“Getting her out of bed and motivating her to participate in the day became so much harder because she had nothing to look forward to.”
Morgan agreed it was a setback when she was removed from the team. Eventually, she was told that she could “return to the team with a doctor’s letter authorizing her to participate in 100% of all team activities and functions.”
Attorney Charlie Wysong said:
“You are subject to state anti-discrimination laws, right? They cannot treat children – especially not kick them out – because they have a mental illness that is a disability. “
Since the unfortunate incident, Morgan and her family have been busy creating Team Morgan, a mental health awareness organization. So far, $ 50,000 has been raised for mental health treatments. Morgan is also playing hockey again, this time on a different team.
Nick Urso, Morgan’s father, said:
“We do this for the next person who comes to their trainer so that it doesn’t happen to anyone else. Not just in hockey, but in all sports. “
When questioned about the incident, the coach said he had “previously had a positive relationship with Morgan and her family”. He added, “I knew I had no background in whatever she was up to and I knew I wasn’t ready to be helpful.”
