Could California Follow NY With Mobile Sports Betting? Not so fast

Cell phone, mobile phone NEW Sports betting might have hobbled over the finish line this month, but don’t expect California to follow suit.

Online sports betting in the Golden State is at least 5-10 years According to panelists at an IGB-led tribal gaming webinar on Tuesday.

What happens with CA sports betting?

Legislative efforts to legalize mobile sports betting in California failed last year amid strong opposition from the Tribes. But California voters could still have a say in sports betting this year.

California Nations Indian Gaming Association chair James Siva said the trunks Tuesday collected enough signatures for a sports betting election initiative. These signatures are checked.

After that, the question on the ballot will be whether the Californians will vote this year on whether to call back Governor Gavin Newsom. Otherwise, the election initiative will have to wait until halfway through 2022.

Initiative not similar to NY Sports Betting

The initiative bears the title California Sports Wagering Regulation and Illegal Gambling Enforcement Act. It would legalize California Sports Betting in tribal casinos and existing horse tracks.

It would be crucial Retail only. It would stay that way until the tribes are ready to go online.

“Going online / mobile right away could have disadvantages for many tribes that cannot find a partner in the field,” said Siva.

However, he said it was not realistic to keep sports betting offline indefinitely. Instead, he envisioned a potential “ramp-up program” over “five years, ten years”.

Siva added, “The initial phase of ‘Just Bricks and Mortar’ will help the tribes find the best way to get involved and find the best partners.”

California has more than 100 Tribes. This is far more than potential online sports betting partners.

Don’t fight the tribes in California

On the same call Victor Rocha, the CConference chair the National Indian Gaming Associationwarned that without tribal support, California lawmakers could not pass a mobile sports betting bill.

“The tribes have exclusivity for games and have no intention of giving that up,” said Rocha. “We can wait and see. Check out ipoker. When it becomes controversial, nobody wins.

“People need to understand that tribes want sports betting, but they can wait. People in the industry don’t understand. It will be retail first. Then when the tribes decide they want to be mobile, it will happen. If people try to move it forward beforehand, we have historical evidence that they are going to have a really tough time. “

Rodney Butler, Chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot tribal nation in the CT, added that the New York mobile sports betting bill had not been good for the tribes.

In short, don’t hold your breath waiting for CA Mobile Sports betting.
