Cyber security is great priority
Companies reported an increased prevalence of cyber attacks on their domains, with many reporting data loss. revenue and reputation as a result. Unsurprisingly, security was also cited as the top challenge when managing a domain portfolio. The overtaking of “promoting a new product or service” that surpassed our 2019 survey, “reducing brand abuse” is now the biggest factor motivating domain management strategies. Our report highlights the key security tactics that organizations use as domain protection best practices.
Domain names are considered valuable IP financial assets
Survey results show that more and more organizations are actively monitoring the value of their domains the vast majority of Respondents who characterize domains as an important part of their IP portfolio, synonymous with patents and trademarks.
Domain portfolio size, complexity, and spending remain the same to grow
Given the increased need for security and the increased value of domain names as IP assets, the number of companies using new generics continued to grow in 2020 Maximum level Domains (new gTLDs), an increase in the overall size of the domain portfolio and a resulting increase in total domain spending. As their portfolio size, importance, and complexity increase, organizations increasingly report that they are making committee decisions about domains.
