The Ashdown Panthers went on the road to battle conference rival the Nashville Scrappers. The Panthers played hard but could not slow the powerful Scrapper offense and lost 55-20.
The Scrappers jumped out to a 21 to 0 lead, but the Panthers fought back with a 42-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Alex Keilbach to sophomore running back Xavier Sanders to cut the lead to 21 to 7.
The Panthers scored twice in the second half on a beautiful 11-yard touchdown pass from Keilbach to sophomore Jaxon Jester. Brett Bond closed out the scoring on a 65-yard scoop and score fumble recovery that exemplified the Panthers pride by continuing to play hard to the final second went off the clock. Defensively, Carter Bowman, Brett Bond, Vincent Jones, AJ Hopkins and Kameron Benton played well.
Coach Matt Richardson and the Panther players remain positive. Richardson feels like the team is ready for a great effort this Friday at two-time defending state champ Arkadelphia.
Sophomore wide receivers Jaxon Jester and Desmond Cornelius both commented on how they came into the season just wanted to contribute and how they have seized the moment, worked hard and are excited to be a vital part of the team.
The sophomore duo has combined for 38 catches and five touchdowns. Both players were quick to give credit to the senior class for pushing them and modeling a never give up attitude.
The Panthers go on the road to battle the Arkadelphia Badgers with opening kickoff Friday at 7 p.m.
