On Aug. 31, peewee football teams from Foreman, Ashdown, Spring Hill, Hooks and DeKalb traveled to the Foreman football field for the First Annual Michael Dixon Pee Wee Football Jamboree.
The Foreman Youth Sports Association (FYSA) hosted the jamboree, and they chose to organize the event in honor of Michael Dixon because he had been an involved member of the FYSA board, according to FYSA Treasurer Amanda Carter.
Dixon died in May 2019, and his mother, sisters and other family members attended the jamboree. “The kids loved him,” Carter said. “He was such a big part of this football.”
The third- and fourth-grade teams played on one end of the field, and the fifth- and sixth-grade teams played on the other end.
The jamboree started at 9 a.m. with the Foreman teams playing the Spring Hill teams.“It’s a great way for surrounding teams to come together,” Carter said. Without keeping score, each team played 10 offensive plays and 10 defensive plays, and every team played two games.
The scrimmage allows the coaches to prepare for the season. Volunteers and FYSA board members helped out in the concession stand and at the ticket booth. “For Foreman, you know, we’re small,” Carter said. “We’re a small community, but we’re a big-hearted community.”
John Baker is the commissioner for the FYSA, and he has coached the fifth- and sixth-grade team for 18 years. “I think they played a fabulous game,” Baker said. “I was overwhelmed by the play they did, no more practice than we could have.”
He said this is the first year the team has joined the FYSA, which is better as he is more help and more people involved. “We have a bunch of new kids,” Baker said. “There’s a lot of kids who [have never] played football, and they’re doing great, and they enjoy it.”
The Foreman peewee teams will play Ashdown on Sept. 7 at the Foreman football field.
